He was a lonely child with a fear of bats, that much is certain.

But—aside from a few scattered sequences over the decades—Bruce’s interiority and how he first dealt with his trauma as a kid remains a mystery. Kurt Busiek and John Paul Leon’s upcoming Batman: Creature of the Darkisn’t exactly setting out to finally explore what Bruce Wayne’s days as a child were like. Rather, it tells the story of Bruce Wainwright, another orphaned boy growing up in Boston who happens to love Batman. After the Wainwright parents are murdered during a robbery, Bruce loses himself in the comics he loves as an escape from the horrors of his own life. According to DC, Creature of the Night can be looked at as a companion book to Busiek and Stuart Immomen’s Superman: Secret Identity from 2. Clark Kent from a world in which superheroes aren’t real who, one day, begins to develop powers similar to Superman’s.

Ragnarok As a Standalone Movie, Not a Sequel. At the recent San Diego Comic- Con, we caught up with Taika Waititi, the dapper director of Thor: Ragnarok, to ask him a few questions about the highly- anticipated Marvel sequel—though he soon admitted that one of the first things he did was toss aside the idea that he was making a sequel at all. It makes sense, really—Ragnarok is the third movie in the Thor series, and we’re several more movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Judging from its gleefully fun latest trailer, approaching Ragnarok as if it were a standalone (or at least, as much as humanly possible, considering its many connections to other films) looks like it was exactly the right decision. And yeah, we are totally jazzed for that Thor- Hulk fight, and whatever Waititi’s got planned for the finale, too. Thor: Ragnarok is out November 3.
